Obituary of John F. Altmann

John F. Altmann, 88, of Prospect, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2019. He was the husband of Joan (Brown) Altmann for 63 years.

 

He was born on August 28, 1930 in Elmhurst, NY, son of the late John F. Altmann Sr. and Auguste (Meschonat) Altmann.

 

John enlisted in the US Army in 1948 and was a veteran of the Korean War. During his years of service, he was in the Signal Corps and became a radio operator. After his honorable discharge, John worked for over 30 years at Burroughs Corporation, which later became Unisys. As a computer field engineer, he maintained and repaired large mainframe computers and check sorting machines used in the banking industry. 

 

He was a resident of Prospect for 58 years. In the 1970’s, he was very involved with Boy Scout Troop 27. He enjoyed working on his antique cars, attending local vintage automobile shows, and traveling with his wife throughout the country to Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club car meets. In his retirement years, he learned to fly ultralight aircraft and enjoyed sailing. For many years, John was an active member of the Waterbury Sail and Power Squadron.

 

John is survived by his son Steven J. Altmann of Naugatuck, his daughter Janet Altmann Brown of Coventry, grandson Evan Brown of Coventry, and his brother Robert Altmann and partner Doris O’Connor of Stony Brook, NY.  He is also survived by several cousins and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 am Saturday February 16 at Christ Episcopal Church, 2030 East Main St., Waterbury. Burial with full Military Honors will be at Prospect Cemetery. Calling hours will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 pm on Friday, February 15 at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Rd., Prospect.
