Obituary of Alice Montagano Matthews

Alice Montagano Matthews, 93, of Prospect and formerly of Waterbury, died peacefully with her family at her side at Midstate Medical Center on November 2, 2020. She was the wife of the late Michael Matthews. She was born in Waterbury, on September 16, 1927, daughter of the late Daniel and Stella (Gigandelli) Feola. Prior to her retirement, Alice worked for Stop and Shop and was well loved by both customers and fellow employees. Alice loved telling jokes which would cause either laughter or groans, most of the time both! She brought joy, empathy, laughter, acceptance and love to so many people. Alice was a great cook and baker, her blueberry muffins were legendary, her homemade pizza and sauce were outstanding. How she loved to feed people! Alice was a woman of great faith and strength which got her through the tough times. She prayed for anyone who needed them. The rosary was very important to her. Her greatest passion besides her children and grandchildren was dancing. Alice enjoyed dancing throughout her life, from her teenage years at Hamilton Park right up to the Prospect Senior Center. Our Mom was filled with light and love. She brought it wherever she went and lifted our spirits. Alice is survived by a son Carl Montagano and wife Marian of Prospect and a daughter Joanne Lenhoff and husband Brad of Venice, CA; three siblings Joseph Feola, Mary Izzi, Stella Gugliotti. She also leaves behind two grandchildren Carlo Montagano and Lucy Lenhoff, along with many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Charles Feola, Michael Feola, Lawrence Feola, Fred Feola and Phyllis Bacco. Alice was very grateful for her grandson Carlo who was her caregiver for many years. The funeral will be held at 11 am on Friday, November 6, 2020 at the Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. A calling hour will be held from 10:00-11:00 am Friday.
