Odessa Bloomfield

Obituary of Odessa Bloomfield

Our mother, Odessa Estella Miles Bloomfield, first entered this earth in Dillon, South Carolina on June 28th 1929 to her late parents Maggie May and John Miles. At the age of six the family relocated to Red Springs, North Carolina where she attended the Shannon Elementary School and completed her first level of education. As a young adult she moved to New York City in 1945 and found her first job working as a live-in maid in Long Island, New York.

Mom then met and married Sedley Oscar Bloomfield where they lived on Sterling Place for a while before settling on Beverly Road in Brooklyn, New York. In that union, they raised eight children; Gary Mitchell, Dorothy McBryde including Sedly Jr., George, Maurice, Ronald, Tammy and Gabriel Bloomfield. She's also survived by her sisters Mary Blue and Helen Marion along with her brothers John Miles and Odell Buie.

Mom worked a number of jobs which include Tic-Toc Cleaners in Brooklyn. She was determined to support and provide, which is why she went on to attend Erasmus Hall night school where she obtained her GED. She also took a course to enter into the healthcare field to become a Dietary Technician for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.

In the community, she was known to other children as the neighborhood mom. She looked out for them just like they were her own. That is why many of the children in our Flatbush area called her "Mama Odessa" because she had a heart for everyone's life essentials as well as her own children.

She was preceded in death by her three sisters: Ruth, Audrey and Lois and her brother Leroy.

Mom has a great extension of family members of whom she loved and raised. Gail Mckeithan who preceded her in death; Stephanie Simons, Apphia, Priscilla, Tyron and Maggie Graham. Her beloved grandchildren: Andre, Charlie, Chris, Rachel, Taasha, Tiffany, Maurice Jr., Estella, Ronald Jr., Corina, Paris, Gabriel Jr., Justice, Jabreel and Jeremiah. Ten wonderful great grandchildren, four adorable great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
