Obituary of Maria Joaquina Antunes Simoes

Maria Joaquina Antunes Simoes, 92, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2018 at VITAS in St. Mary’s Hospital while surrounded by loved ones. She was the loving wife of the late Manuel Simoes for over 57 years.

She was a woman of many talents and as sweet as she was feisty. She moved the family to the US in 1968, from Portugal and worked at St. Mary’s Hospital for 19 years. Her passions were gardening and spending time with family. She was blessed in life with love. She married her childhood sweetheart and truly did live happily ever after and we know she has been looking forward to their reunion. She will be missed deeply and never forgotten.

Maria raised three children, Celeste (Rui) Marques, Fernando (Deana) Simoes, and Maria (Larry) Maynard. She has 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren who were truly blessed to know and love her. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two sisters Maria Alves and Elvira Janeiro and a brother Antonio Antunes.

The family would like to thank the staff of St. Mary’s Hospital VITAS unit for their outstanding and compassionate care.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 20, 2018 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 2071 Baldwin St, Waterbury. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery, Waterbury. Calling hour will be from 9-10 am on Friday at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect.
